Getting Started in Texas Hold ‘Em
For the most part, this blog is going to be about advanced skills that can be used in Texas Hold ‘Em, skills that will give you a competitive advantage over everyone else at the table. For start, however, I want to talk about something basic.
Every beginning poker player has to make sure they understand the basics, and every advanced poker player needs to review the basics consistently. Nothing gets you beat in poker more than getting too cocky. For this reason, I think two books are required reading for any poker player.
First, Hold’Em Poker by David Sklansky breaks down the game as logically and simply as anyone has ever done it. The book makes sure you know the best and worst starting hands (knowledge no poker player can do without). It also discusses strategies like check-raising, semi-bluffing, and implied pot odds. Read this book.
Most people regard Doyle Brunson as the greatest poker player ever, and his book Super Systems changed the game forever. Calling yourself a poker player and not reading this book is like calling yourself a film buff without ever seeing Casablanca. Read this book.
There are dozens of other good poker literature out there, but if you read these two books, you will have a great start on getting the Poker knowledge you need to be successful.
